Petition to Mayor Greg Nickels and Other City Officials
Mayor Nickels, by signing this petition, I strongly endorse the vision of the Queen Anne neighborhood as a historic, locally-focused, pedestrian-centered community. Queen Anne’s historic character grows from a rich and deep mixture of homes, apartments, small businesses, schools, parks, and people from all walks of life.
The proposed redevelopment in the 1900 block of Queen Anne Avenue North poses a direct threat to our neighborhood in terms of scale, traffic, parking, public safety, access, and character. Replacing the Metropolitan Market with a greatly expanded QFC/Kroger multi-story complex will not only negatively transform the core of our neighborhood, but it will also remove a building with many affordable apartment units. We value diversity. Affordable housing enriches our neighborhood.
The proposed redevelopment comes when several other projects are also of significant concern. These projects considered together are alarming.
I encourage you, Mayor Nickels, members of the City Council, and city planning staff to join me and my neighbors who have signed this petition to ensure that any new development in Queen Anne conform to our vision of our neighborhood. We must not allow this neighborhood to become “endangered” because of irresponsible development.
